Pylontech batteries excel in 6-year Australian Battery Study
With the rising popularity of home batteries, ITP Renewables, supported by a grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency commenced a Lithium-ion battery testing study in 2015. Based in Canberra, the study involved the performance testing of conventional and emerging battery technologies, including a sample from Redback’s battery supplier – Pylontech. With a total of over six years of testing completed by the end of March 2022, this study has provided valuable insights into battery performance across Australia.
There were two key takeaway points from this report. The first was that the overall reliability of the battery units is still needing improvement, with batteries from multiple manufacturers showing faults and leaks. The second was retention of power capacity over time, with several batteries showing capacity drops of over 50% after just 5 years.
In April 2020, the report noted that: “the Sony and Samsung battery packs from Phase 1 have proven reliable, alongside the Pylontech and GNB Lithium battery packs from Phase 2. Both the Tesla Powerwall 1 and the BYD B-Box LV stopped cycling due to operational issues”. The study also stated that they have “not experienced any operational issues with the Pylontech battery pack”. It is this high quality manufacturing that gives Redback the confidence to partner with Pylontech for our battery storage solutions.
September 2021’s report looked at the State of Health or maximum retention over time and noted that “both the Sony and Pylontech batteries were also showing excellent capacity retention after a high number of cycles”. The graph below (taken from the study) shows that Pylontech is leading the field in terms of its State of Health, which shows how the maximum capacity is after a full charge cycle. After 2800 cycles, the State of Health is still sitting at approximately 77%.
At Redback Technologies, we are proud of the batteries that we put into our home battery storage solutions. The evidence from ITP Renewable’s 6-year long study cements what we already knew – that the products we have designed for Australian homes are built to stand the test of time and are created using quality materials from industry leading manufacturers.
