Power through blackouts

A great benefit in having a Smart Hybrid battery storage system installed at your home or business is the security of knowing that your battery can help you power through a grid outage.

In the event of a utility grid outage (i.e. a ‘blackout’), you can use the energy stored in your battery system to power essential appliances in your home. When the grid goes down, the backup circuit will kick in automatically as long as you have battery power available.

Unlike AC-coupled units, the Smart Hybrid System allows to you continue charging your solar storage using the sun even during a grid interruption. Australian homes and businesses connected to the grid will mainly run on single phase or three phase power.

Choosing the wrong type of system will negatively impact your solar set up so it is important to understand the difference between single and three phase power and how to determine which one your home runs on.

At Redback Technologies, we have hybrid solar power systems designed specifically for three phase homes, and single phase homes. So it’s important to know which power type your home is, in order to select the right option. As the name suggests, our Smart 3-Phase Hybrid System is designed for three phase homes. For single phase homes, our Smart Hybrid System is best.

The easiest way to check which power your home has is to look inside your main switchboard. You will want to find a switch that is labelled “Main Switch”. In a single phase home, you will find your “Main Switch” consists of one switch inside your main switchboard. In a three phase home, you will find your “Main Switch” consists of three switches connected inside your main switchboard. If you have two phase power you will find your “Main Switch” consists of two switches connected inside your main switchboard. Two phase power is rare, however.

Single phase power is common in many new Australian homes and even in new businesses. Three phase power is more common in larger homes with greater energy needs such as large air-conditioning systems, electric car chargers, spas, and pool heaters and more. Two phase power is rare but can sometimes occur if the single phase power requirements of a home exceed the maximum demand as calculated by an electrician.

Installing a hybrid solution allows you to get all of the benefits of a separate solar inverter and battery storage but in one aesthetically appealing unit.

This means that you can avoid unsightly excess cabling as the wiring is hidden in our IP55-protected cabinetry.
