Redback Technologies working to support WA microgrid company Horizon Power

Solar with home battery storage has gained popularity in Australia due to increasing electricity costs. However, since Western Australia is a remote area, it’s crucial that the solar systems managed are installed under specific technical requirements so that the electrical network is not compromised. Redback Technologies are working to support Horizon Power grids to remain resilient and safe while enabling customers to benefit from renewable energy.

The specific updates to Horizon Power technical requirements are:

  1. ‘Hosting Capacity’ increases to many of the Horizon Power grids – until recently, many regional towns had low hosting capacity limits that had been reached. Over the past several years, customers have been frustrated as they were unable to gain permission to install solar (+storage) and connect to the Horizon Power grids.   This new increase in ‘Hosting Capacities’ now allows customers to install solar+storage systems.  However, the new Hosting Capacity limits vary and still represent a limit.  There is a strong demand for solar(+storage) and it is expected the new Hosting Capacity limits will be reached quickly
  2. New technical requirements for solar+storage systems: Redback Smart Hybrid Systems now fully comply with Horizon Power requirements – in addition, Redback Technologies (via WA representatives) has engaged directly with Horizon Power to ensure Redback systems will be approved.

In conclusion, the Redback Smart Hybrid System can be installed on the Horizon power network without compromising the electrical network for both residential and small commercial users under controlled conditions. The inclusion of home battery storage allows for energy to be drawn from the batteries rather than the electrical network, ensuring the grid doesn’t weaken in the event of a power outage.

The Horizon Power Network is open and taking solar energy applications now! If you’re living in Broome, Kunnunurra, Exmouth or Carnarvon and are interested in solar with battery storage, now is the time to take action! Everyone must go through the Horizon Power process, and each system that is installed must be compatible with the network.

So, how does the Redback Smart Hybrid System work?

We consume most of our power in the morning when we’re getting ready for work, and the end of the day when we get home. However, solar panels generate most of their energy in the middle of the day. The Redback Smart Hybrid System ensures you aren’t wasting valuable generated energy.  Storing it in your home battery storage for later use, reducing your need for electricity in peak periods, all without damaging the grid.   This allows you to use all your generated solar energy and save even more.
